In 1992 in Germany a few friends wanted access to the internet (That was before the World Wide Web) for email and access to hardware drivers.
Back at that time that was incredibly expensive, so in order to compensate the cost, they started to offer that access to other friends and people as well.
All that without the benefit of being able to just 'google' how to do something.
The little network finally grew into a triply redundant Europe wide backbone of lines and routers in 2000.
